Kafue: Puku ram

The first safari of the season always carries a certain energy — a mix of anticipation, uncertainty, and the quiet promise of the wild coming back to life. There’s nothing quite like the thrill of a Kafue mobile camping safari to start the adventure.

This opening trip set the tone perfectly for our Kafue mobile camping safari.

Over four nights of fully serviced mobile camping, we explored the remote corners of South Luangwa — two nights at Kasabushi and two nights at Musungwa. No lodges, no distractions — just canvas tents, open fires, and the rhythm of the bush. This is truly what sets a Kafue mobile camping safari apart from other safaris.

A Safari in Images

Kasabushi: Wild Dogs and a Flash of Color

Kasabushi delivered immediately.

Early in the trip, we encountered what would become the defining sighting:
a pack of 13 African Wild Dogs.

We spent extended time with them over multiple sightings — watching their coordination, their communication, and that relentless, purposeful movement that makes them one of Africa’s most captivating predators.

Alongside the dogs, Kasabushi gave us:

  • Elegant sable antelope moving through open grassland
  • Calm, feeding elephants in lush green bush
  • A stunning Racket-tailed Roller, flashing its long streamers in perfect light

No lions, no leopards — but absolutely no sense of missing out.

Musungwa: Space, Light, and New Life

Moving to Musungwa, the landscape opened up — wider floodplains, longer views, and a deeper sense of isolation.

This is where the safari shifted from sightings to atmosphere. In fact, a Kafue mobile camping safari is ideal for moments like these.

Here, one of the most memorable moments was quiet and intimate:
a tiny baby puku, fragile and still learning the world.

Other moments included:

  • Elephants moving across distant plains
  • Quiet river crossings
  • Tracks telling stories long before we saw the animals

This is the kind of safari that rewards patience and awareness.

Beyond the Big Game

One of the defining aspects of this trip was its diversity.

Beyond the headline sightings, the bush was alive with detail:

  • Painted dogs resting and interacting
  • Hippos in the river systems
  • Reptiles, insects, and smaller mammals adding layers to the experience
  • Dramatic skies, shifting light, and ever-changing textures

These are the elements that turn a safari into a complete experience — not just a checklist.

The Value of Mobile Camping

This safari was entirely mobile camping, and it made all the difference.

Our setup included:

  • Spacious dome tents with proper beds and bedding
  • Fresh, fire-cooked meals
  • Evenings around camp under a full African sky

No fences, no generators — just immersion.

At night, the sounds carried: hyenas, insects, distant movement.
In the morning, the bush woke slowly, and we moved with it. Ultimately, what you remember most is that a Kafue mobile camping safari offers this true connection to nature.

No Cats, No Compromise

It’s easy to judge a safari by big cats — but this trip is a reminder that quality isn’t defined by a single species.

The wild dogs alone would have made the journey exceptional.
Add sable, elephants, birdlife, and the intimacy of a tiny puku — and it becomes something far richer.

This was a safari about process, presence, and perspective.

The Season Begins

If this first trip is any indication, the season ahead is shaping up well.

The bush is green, wildlife is active, and the remote camps are exactly where they should be — far from the crowds, close to the experience. In short, this is the beauty of a Kafue mobile camping safari.
