Steaming Kafue River

Birding Bliss on the Shishamba River Loop – 3 Nights at Kasabushi Camp, Kafue NP

Deep in the heart of Central Kafue National Park, the Shishamba River Loop winds through pristine miombo woodland and open floodplain, making it an ideal location for winter birding enthusiasts. Winter birding offers one of Zambia’s most rewarding birding and wildlife circuits. During our three-night stay at the peaceful and beautifully situated Kasabushi Camp, we experienced exceptional birdlife, striking landscapes, and a moment of quiet wild drama.

Cold Mornings, Warm Sightings

At dawn, the Kafue River steamed in the crisp morning air—thin mist curling gently off the surface, rising into the stillness. Wrapped in jackets, coffee in hand, winter birding allowed us to watch the bush come alive. Collared Sunbirds darted through flowering trees near camp. They caught the first rays of light with flashes of metallic green and yellow.

Among the birding highlights:

  • ? Martial Eagle – A solitary giant perched atop a bare tree, scanning the landscape below with steely poise.
  • ? Ross’s Turaco – Their vibrant blue and crimson wings burst through the canopy like living fireworks. Their calls echoed through the forest.
  • ? Schalow’s Turaco – Slightly more secretive, with shaggy crests and gleaming green feathers gliding between branches.
  • ? African Green Pigeon – Blending almost perfectly into fruiting trees, their gentle movement was often the only giveaway.
  • ? Arnott’s Chat – Bold and charismatic, often seen on the ground or low perches in open woodland.
  • ? Vultures – Silent sentinels circling high, always hinting that something was unfolding nearby.

And then, at the end of the loop road, a remarkable sight: a lion pride gathered around a fresh puku kill, feeding calmly in the late afternoon light. There were no bloody scenes—just focused intensity as the lions took turns at the carcass. Meanwhile, vultures began to perch in the surrounding trees, patiently waiting. It was a scene of perfect stillness and power, framed by golden grass and soft breeze, perfect for winter birding enthusiasts.

Camp Life and Nightfall Sounds

Kasabushi Camp is an ideal base for exploring central Kafue. It blends seamlessly into its riverine setting, offering front-row access to nature without the distractions of large-scale tourism. Even between drives, birding continues: Collared Sunbirds, woodland doves, and the occasional turaco often show up within camp.

As night fell, a new chorus began. The unmistakable call of the Fiery-necked Nightjar echoed through the woodland—”good lord deliver us.” Meanwhile, the African Wood Owl added its haunting hoots to the dark. There were no fireflies dancing, but the stars above and the gentle hush of the river made the evening feel equally enchanted.
