Day four of a Luangwa Valley traverse runs south through Chama’s remote villages into North Luangwa — a park so untouched we were the first vehicle on some loops this year.

Not every stop on a Luangwa Valley traverse is about wildlife sightings. Luambe is the one where the pressure on that wildlife becomes impossible to ignore — buffalo pushed out of the park, and lions sheltering in the village next door....

Day 1 of a Luangwa Valley safari doesn't end in a Day 1 of a Luangwa Valley safari doesn't end in a national park. It ends at Bridge Camp, right on the Mozambique border — as far as you can drive from Lusaka in an afternoon. On the way down, the road drops through the Chongwe escarpment: switchbacks, valley views, and the first real sense that you're leaving the city behind.

Day 2 is the better half of this stretch: an excursion out to Feira, Zambia's oldest recorded European settlement. Portuguese traders founded it in the early 1700s, right where the Luangwa River meets the Zambezi — close to where Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique all meet on the map. Long before this was a safari stop, it was a trading post for ivory, copper, and slaves. Standing there is more sobering than scenic.

Lioness Fights to Save Her Last Cub in South Luang Lioness Fights to Save Her Last Cub in South Luangwa

In South Luangwa’s Wafwa area, a lioness carries her only remaining cub towards safety as three young males threaten to take over the Mfuwe Pride. These tender early-morning moments reveal a powerful story of motherhood, courage and survival in the wild....

A Mother’s Fight for the Last One This is South L A Mother’s Fight for the Last One

This is South Luangwa, in the Wafwa area.

In the soft golden light, a lioness moves carefully through the dry grass with her only remaining cub. When the little one struggles to keep up, she gently lifts it in her jaws and carries it towards safety.

But danger is never far away.

The Mfuwe Pride is under immense pressure. A coalition of three young male lions is challenging the pride’s two resident males—and caught in the middle are two lionesses with vulnerable cubs.

If the coalition succeeds in taking over the pride, the cubs will face grave danger. Incoming males commonly kill cubs that are not their own, bringing the lionesses back into breeding condition and beginning a new bloodline.

For this mother, every movement matters. Every hidden place offers hope. Her only remaining cub depends entirely on her courage, instinct and determination.

This is the reality of life among lions: beautiful, powerful and unforgiving. For now, mother and cub continue their journey together—and we can only hope the little one survives.

Most safari itineraries take you to one park.
