Follow the journey from Lusaka through Luangwa Bridge Camp and the Luangwa Valley to experience one of Africa’s most authentic wildlife destinations.
Every safari has a story. Some begin with a lion sighting or a dramatic sunset. Ours began on the road out of Lusaka, heading east towards one of Africa’s greatest wilderness areas: South Luangwa National Park.
The journey itself is an essential part of the experience.
Leaving Lusaka behind, we travelled along the Great East Road, Zambia’s main artery to the eastern part of the country. The road winds through farming communities, villages, and bustling roadside markets where fresh produce is piled high on wooden stalls and beautifully woven baskets hang in colourful displays.

Travelling in Zambia teaches patience and curiosity. Along the way, potholes demand attention, roadside vendors tempt travellers to stop, and every village offers a glimpse into daily life. The Great East Road is more than a route—it is a journey through Zambia’s culture, resilience, and hospitality.
About 240 kilometres east of Lusaka, we reached Luangwa Bridge Camp, perched on the banks of the Luangwa River near the border with Mozambique.
Here, safari takes on a different meaning.
As evening approaches, the wide sandy banks of the river become a football field. Local children, camp staff, and visitors gather for an informal match, playing until the last light fades behind the surrounding hills. There are no grandstands, no floodlights, and often no proper goalposts—just a ball, plenty of enthusiasm, and a magnificent setting.

These moments remind us that travel is not only about wildlife. It is also about people, shared experiences, and the communities that call these remarkable landscapes home.
The following day, we continued east to Chipata before turning northwest onto the Mfuwe Road, the final stretch towards South Luangwa National Park.
The 125-kilometre road to Mfuwe is famous throughout Zambia. Potholes demand concentration, and progress is often slow, but the journey is rewarding. Villages dot the roadside, bicycles carry everything from sacks of maize to bundles of firewood, and children wave enthusiastically as vehicles pass by.
After approximately 75 kilometres, the road climbs onto the escarpment overlooking the Luangwa Valley. Suddenly, the landscape changes.
The vast valley unfolds below, stretching towards the horizon in a patchwork of forests, grasslands, and river systems. The descent into the valley is spectacular. The air becomes warmer, the vegetation changes, and the first signs of wildlife begin to appear.
Baboons sit confidently beside the road, watching passing vehicles with curiosity. Vervet monkeys dart through the trees, and birds of prey circle high above the valley floor. These early encounters are a reminder that you are entering one of Africa’s last great wilderness areas.
Soon, we reached Mfuwe and the gateway to South Luangwa National Park.
There are places in Africa that stay with you forever, and South Luangwa is undoubtedly one of them.
Known as the wildlife jewel of Zambia, the park is a land of winding rivers, ancient ebony forests, towering baobabs, and extraordinary wildlife. Every game drive promises new discoveries and unexpected encounters.

One morning, mist drifted above the Luangwa River while fish eagles announced the start of a new day. Zebra grazed peacefully in the golden light as elephants moved through lush riverine forests searching for fresh vegetation.
Nearby, hippos rested quietly in the river, seemingly unconcerned by the world around them. Not far away, an impala stood alert, discovering that privacy is almost impossible in the African bush.
A lioness moved silently through the grass, her attention fixed on a zebra carcass hidden deep within the thickets. Every step was deliberate. Every movement told a story of survival.

Above the scene stood a magnificent ancient baobab tree, watching over the valley as it has for centuries. In many ways, it symbolised South Luangwa itself—timeless, resilient, and deeply connected to the rhythms of nature.

The beauty of South Luangwa lies not only in its wildlife but in the stories unfolding all around you.
One moment you are watching lion cubs playing in the soft morning light. The next, you are following the elusive movements of a leopard through the shadows of an ebony forest. A little later, you find yourself surrounded by elephants feeding peacefully while colourful bee-eaters flash across the riverbank.
As the day draws to a close, the Luangwa River glows beneath another unforgettable African sunset. The sounds of the bush begin to change. Hippos emerge from the water to graze, nightjars call from the darkness, and the wilderness prepares for another night.

These are the moments that make South Luangwa one of Africa’s finest safari destinations.
It is a place where wildlife thrives, where nature remains wonderfully untamed, and where every day brings a new story.
