Lioness with cub resting in South Luangwa National Park, Zambia

This is South Luangwa, in the Wafwa area—a landscape of extraordinary beauty, but also a place where survival is never guaranteed.

In the soft golden light of early morning, a lioness walks along the dusty track with her only remaining cub following closely behind. The little one tries to keep pace, staying near the safety of its mother’s powerful legs. When the journey becomes too difficult, she gently lifts the cub in her jaws and carries it into the cover of the dry grass.

It is a tender moment, but behind it lies a much more dangerous story.

The Mfuwe Pride is under increasing pressure. A coalition of three young male lions has entered the area and is challenging the pride’s two resident males. The newcomers are determined to take control of the territory, the females and the future of the pride.

Caught in the middle are two lionesses with young cubs.

If the coalition defeats or drives away the resident males, the cubs will be in grave danger. New males taking control of a pride will often kill cubs that are not their own. This brings the lionesses back into breeding condition and allows the new males to establish their own bloodline.

For this lioness, the threat is especially heartbreaking. She has already lost the rest of her litter, and this little cub is her only remaining one. Every step she takes, every hiding place she chooses and every sound she listens for could determine whether her cub survives.

These photographs capture more than a lioness carrying her young. They tell a story of motherhood, courage and the relentless struggle for survival.

For now, mother and cub remain together. Their future is uncertain, but hope walks beside them through the golden grass of South Luangwa at the beginning of a new day.
