🐘 The Power and Purpose of an Elephant’s Trunk and 🐘 The Power and Purpose of an Elephant’s Trunk and Tusks An elephant’s trunk is one of nature’s most extraordinary tools — a combination of a nose, upper lip, and hand, all in one. With over 40,000 muscles, this versatile organ helps elephants breathe, smell, drink, feed, communicate, and show affection. It can delicately pick up a blade of grass or uproot an entire tree! Then there are the tusks — elongated incisor teeth made of ivory. Elephants use them to dig for water, strip bark from trees, lift objects, and defend themselves. Each tusk tells a story; just like we’re left- or right-handed, elephants can be “tuskers” — preferring one tusk over the other. Sadly, tusks have also made elephants targets of poaching.
