Today, we go birding by the sewage ponds in Living

Today, we go birding by the sewage ponds in Livingstone. It’s Sunday morning, cold season approaching fast. Not so easy to leave the blankets. A quick coffee, binoculars, camera and bird book and off we go. We head to the sewage ponds between Dambwa Site & Service and the Mosi-oa-Tunya NP. One of the easy to reach places for birding in Livingstone. This area is part of the Mosi-oa-Tunya NP and Batoka Gorge Important Birding Area (ZM013) and covers 8600ha in total. The ponds are partly overgrown with water hyacinth. Perfect habitat for African Purple Swamphen, Lesser and Greater Jacana, egrets, herons, lapwings and a lot more. Of cause birds are the main thing but it is definitely worth to look for insects, like butterflies and dragon flies, as well. Have a look at a few photos from this morning.

Our Safari is conducted in Mosi-oa-Tunya NP just outside Livingstone. This is the second-smallest national park in Zambia. It is bordered by Livingstone town, farmland and the Zambezi River. Established in 1972 as a wildlife reserve it hosts a variety of species. Warthogs, Impala, Waterbuck, Greater Kudu, Chacma Baboon, Blue Wildebeest, African Buffalo, Plains Zebra, Bushbuck, Southern Giraffes and many more are found in the park. It is home to the only White Rhino population in Zambia as well.

Occasionally we see White Rhinos an the safari drive while the other species are commonly spotted. We offer Rhino tracking for those that are keen to see them. The park does not have any resident predators. The tracks of Spotted Hyenas were seen on several times recently. Mosi-oa-Tunya NP has different habitats like riverine forest, mopane woodland and grassland. This diversity supports many bird species. The colorful Kingfishers along the river, the noisy Spurfowls, Zambia’s national bird the African Fish Eagle, African Hoopoe are among them.

Inside the national park we have an old graveyard where a few of the first settlers from the Old Drift village found their last resting place. We will tell you a bit about the history of the first White settlement in this area.

Our Safari in Mosi-oa-Tunya NP takes approximately 3hrs. We pick you from your accommodation in Livingstone and head to the park. Before we start our Safari drive in Mosi-oa-Tunya NP we will ask you about your interests. What would you like to see? We can not guaranty it but we will do our best to find what you are looking for.

We will have a picnic where you can have a snack and juice / bottled water.

The safari can start as early as 06:00hrs with the latest departure around 15:00hrs.

Put your skills to the test while Rhino tracking with qualified guide and armed DNPW escort ranger in Livinstone’s Mosi-oa-Tunya NP. Come with us and have educative fun while finding the Rhinos on exclusive walking safaris. We focus on tracking White or Square-lipped Rhinos which are resident in Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park. We are very fortunate to have a herd of 10 White Rhinos which is under constant surveillance to prevent them from being poached. While moving through the bush we identify tracks, plants, birds and their calls. We might come across other animal species like Zebras, Wildebeest, Warthog, Impala, Baboons, etc.

We offer Rhino tracking all year round. This activity can be combined with our Tour of the Victoria Falls and it is part of the 1-Day Highlights around the Victoria Falls.

The tour starts at around 06:00hrs and takes approx. 3-4 hours. You are escorted by a professional guide and an armed DNPW escort ranger. Light snacks and water are provided during the tour. Transfers from Lodges and / or Hotels within Livingstone and park entry fees are included in the price.

Our Kokomo Safari is 17 nights / 18 days long. We focus on the vast Kafue NP and the pristine wilderness of Liuwa Plain NP to witness the 2nd largest wildebeest migration in Africa and see the amazing birdlife of Liuwa Plain NP and Kafue NP. We track White Rhinos on foot in Mosi-oa-Tunya NP, the only place in Zambia where this can be done. Our 18-Day Kokomo Safari is ideal for solo travelers, families and tiny groups. 8-Day Kwalata Safari is a semi-participation mobile safari. It starts in Lusaka and ends in Livingstone. The focus is on the central and southern part of the vast Kafue NP. We can not guaranty that we see Lions, Leopards, Wild Dogs and Cheetahs but for sure they are there. The common animals species are Puku, Impala, Warthog, Lichtenstein’s Hartebeest. Birding is very good too especially along the rivers where African Finfoot can be seen and several species of Kingfishers. In Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park we will track White Rhinos. A visit of the Victoria Falls is part of the itinerary.

Another delivery to the Hinterland. This time we headed to Nguba with 2 loads of beehives. The rainy season just ended and tracks are not maintained so I thought it might be a good idea to get someone to accompany us on the way. I should have ask how he usually moves as he directed me through tracks more suitable for oxcarts. We made it and reached Nguba. On the way back I followed the tracks of a truck and made it back to Kalomo in half the time.
